153. EXT. HOSPITAL ENTRANCE - NIGHT
Alex leaves the hospital and stops a taxi in the street. He looks at the driver and stares at him as if he were a ghost.
ALEX (V.O.)
There he was, the idol of my youth. Now, like a conjured-up spirit: Sigmund Jaehn. He wasn't signing any autographs, wasn’t talking about the secrets of the universe, the freedom of floating in space or the infinite firmament. He was driving a stinking little “Wartburg” taxi .
Finally, Alex gets into the cab.
SIGMUND JAEHN LOOKALIKE
Where are you going?
ALEX
Dahlem.
The driver drives off. Alex keeps staring at him.
SIGMUND JAEHN LOOKALIKE
What’s the matter?
They continue through Berlin at night.
154. EXT. HOUSE IN ROSEN STREET – NIGHT
The taxi approaches the house slowly. The driver kills the motor. Alex stares at the living room window. Robert Kerner and his partner, Andrea, are entertaining another couple. They are laughing and drinking wine.
SIGMUND JAEHN LOOKALIKE
Shall I stop the meter?
ALEX
No.
He stares at the window. Little Carla and Thomas in pajamas come into the living room. Robert Kerner gets up and talks to the children. He takes Carla in his arms and carries her to the window, showing her something without seeing the taxi. He gives her a goodnight kiss, then exits the living room with both of them. Alex looks up to the clear starry sky, then turns to the driver.
ALEX (cont’d)
What was it like up there?
The taxi driver looks surprised for a minute.
SIGMUND JAEHN LOOKALIKE
Up there?
Then he realizes Alex’s mix-up and smiles, looking up at the sky.
SIGMUND JAEHN LOOKALIKE (cont’d)
Oh, up there.
(to Alex)
It was beautiful. Just very far away from home.
Alex looks at his father’s house and repeats:
ALEX
Yes, far away from home.
After a while, he turns to the driver.
ALEX (cont’d)
Karl Marx Avenue, East Berlin, please.
